Girl I Used To Know

Girl I Used To KnowGood Morning folks, I am sure the day has been good so far. In case you got beat by the rain, sorry. Happy Birthday Omzz!

This post was sent to me by a friend of mine, you can follow her @AcousticHannah. I hope you enjoy it.

Among the cluttered archives of my pen
Lie the memories of a girl whom I once called “me”
Her eyes alight
Luminous as the sun
But her figure grows dim
With every breath that’s drawn
The inquisitive mind’s questions lie eternally subdued
Her heart’s inner strength quietly accrued
The insistent cruelty claims her will as it’s prize
embedding it’s malice into her deepest confines
Riddled with conflict, despair, and her newfound host
Her identity peals
Her former self now a ghost.
As I cling to the memories
of her once innocent form
A searing pain jets through me
And I mourn
This girl pure as rain
Is now all but gone
Her resolve, self-assurance
WIll, and life all won
Won by a cruelty too often bestowed on the meek
Teased and berated, abused by her critique
Judgement weighs on her slight frame
The weight of the world, she is to blame
She loves on in spite of her impending demise
Rendered by those she loves deeply
With her once bright eyes
The eyes reflect this battered soul
The eyes that grow dim as she will never be whole
Damaged and beaten by life itself
The irony is uncanny
The toll it takes is real
The shell keeps going
A pariah she is now
The inverse of a corpse
She is the walking dead
Why her heart continues beating
or blood flows through her veins
Why she draws in breath
Or why she even has a name…
Is a questioning plea
For someone to reclaim
This girl I once called “me”

The Persona appears to be in anguish mourning the lost of her former self, placing the blame on “those she loves deeply” but who have become her “critique”.

Despite the length, there is no clear reason why she’s been spurned which makes the poem a bit incomplete.

I shudder at the use of strong imagery in the poem such as “inverse corpse”, “walking dead”, “ghost” and “pariah”. It shows that the Persona attached an unwholesome importance to being accepted by the society, and lack of that acceptance to her mean literary and emotional demise.

The Persona should by herself rediscover herself again. Her eyes which luminated like the sun in the beginning of the poem but grew dim midway need not be so if she decides not to seek public acclaim but find that a ‘hero lies inside her’.

On a scale of 10, I rate the poem 7.
